Job Description

The research unit Marine Natural Products Chemistry / GEOMAR-Biotech conducts basic and applied research in the fields of marine natural product chemistry, marine biotechnology and marine chemical ecology. We are seeking a competent and experienced chemical-technical assistant to perform and support wide range of analytical chemistry and marine natural products chemistry/biotechnology tasks. Therefore, the readiness for continuous learning and establishing new methods, particularly in the field of marine natural products, is an important prerequisite. The candidate will be expected to prioritize multiple tasks, meeting strict deadlines and contribute to laboratory management.

The tasks are:

  • Generation of crude extracts from various marine (micro)biological material
  • Chemical analysis, including the dereplication of the crude extracts and fractions obtained therefrom by hyphenated techniques such as HPLC-DAD/MS, UPLC-QTOF-MS/MS, UPLC-QTOF-DESI-IMS, GC-MS, and other techniques
  • Purification of marine natural products by chromatographic methods (HPLC)
  • Sample and compound preparation for chemical analyses
  • Installation, maintenance and repair of chemical and analytical equipment
  • Planning, implementation and documentation of experiments
  • Training and technical support of the academic staff, students and the industrial project partners in the experimental processing of all R & D projects
  • General lab organization and tasks (washing, solvent change, waste treatment etc.)
  • Support for process development
  • Ordering chemicals and consumables

Your profile

Requirements for successful application are:

  • Chemical-technical assistant or related professional education
  • Profound knowledge in analytical chemistry, especially hyphenated mass spectrometry techniques
  • Solid experience in chromatographic separations (HPLC and others)
  • Excellent communication skills in German (both spoken and written)
  • Proficiency in English (both spoken and written)

Desirable qualifications

  • Experience in multidisciplinary research environment
  • Previous experience in ship-going expeditions
  • A full car driving license
  • A scientific diving license

The research unit Marine Natural Products Chemistry offers a dynamic, international and innovative research environment with excellent infrastructure and networks, a collaborative work culture, thus is an ideal incubator for a successful career. Our labs are equipped with state-of-the-art chemical facilities including in-house UPLC-QTOF-MS coupled with DESI Imaging Mass Spectrometry, HPLC-DAD-MS, HPLC-HRMS, GC-MS, automated extraction systems such as Accelerated Solvent Extraction (ASE) and Supercritical Fluid Extraction (SFE), HPLC, FT-IR, polarimeter and related databases, as well as excellent microbiology/biotechnology facilities and over 75 running in vitro biological assays. GEOMAR has full access to high-resolution (cryo-) NMR facilities at Kiel University. We lead or participate multiple collaborative EU or national research projects.

Working language in the group is English.

The position is permanent. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E9a TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position and the position can be basically split.
