A platform for marine sciences, unique in Europe, has being created on the site of the fish market on Kiel's eastern shore. With the move to the new extension building, a plan became reality that was already laid out in 2004 when the then IFM-GEOMAR was founded from the Institute of Oceanography (IfM) on the west shore of the Kiel Fjord with the Geomar Research Center for Marine Geosciences on the east shore. Because even though the two previous locations were less than a nautical mile apart, the separation was not optimal for daily work. As of October 2023, GEOMAR’s new building on the east shore campus now unites all four research divisions.
The GEOMAR campus is located on the former sea fish market at the opening of the Schwentine river. ► Download GEOMAR location map (pdf)
