Integrative Research Foci

The Integrative Research Foci (IRF) sharpen and shape the integrative research of GEOMAR. They bring together members of the four research divisions to address relevant societal challenges. Balancing basic and applied research, they are anchored in the Helmholtz programme “Changing Earth – Sustaining our Future”.

IRF Atlantic Ocean Upwelling

Multidisciplinary research on natural and societal systems in tropical upwelling regimes enables assessment of future fisheries, economic potential, conservation strategies and climate connections.

IRF Marine Carbon Sinks

Marine Carbon Sinks will study the ocean’s role in the natural and anthropogenically perturbed carbon cycle and provide assessments of potential options for enhancing marine carbon dioxide removal.

IRF Digital Twin Ocean

Digital Twins, as interactive 4D visualizations, will bundle and provide access to sensor data and simulations to explore “what if” scenarios.

IRF Metals in the Ocean

Metals in marine systems are both resources and nutrients, but also proxies of ocean circulation and climate history. The IRF "Metals in the Ocean" aims to gain new information to promote activities for a predictable, healthy and sustainable future ocean.
