senior scientist (m/f/d) in multiphysics modeling of crustal fluid flow

Deadline: 1st July 2024

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation under public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the State of Schleswig-Holstein (10%). It is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine research.

Through our research and our commitment to the transfer of knowledge and technology, we contribute significantly to the preservation of the function and protection of the ocean for future generations. The research division 4 “dynamics of the ocean floor” studies processes at the interface between the solid earth and the oceans, which directly impact human society and the functioning of the Earth’s ecosystems. This research aims to inform decisions for a safer and more sustainable future and is designed around the synthesis of data acquisition, laboratory work, and numerical modeling.

To strengthen the numerical modeling team, the research unit “magmatic and hydrothermal systems” of the research division 4 is offering a position as

senior scientist (m/f/d)

in multiphysics modeling of crustal fluid flow

starting on January 1st, 2025.

Job Description

  • Coordinate our strategic model development in the field of reactive transport in marine sediments and ocean crust.
  • Curate existing models and drive the development of new models.
  • Engage with the research division’s working groups to reach a synthesis of observations, analytics, and modeling.
  • Build your team and conduct independent research addressing pressing questions regarding seafloor hazards and resources as well as earth system processes.
  • Contribute to the international standing and visibility of the modeling team.

Qualification

The prerequisites for a successful application are

  • a PhD or equivalent in applied mathematics, geophysics, or related field.
  • Excellent numerical modeling (FE and FV) and programming (C++) skills documented in peer-reviewed publications and research projects.
  • Experience in conducting multiphysics simulations and in developing multiphysics numerical models in the fields of gas migration in marine sediments and the geomorphic evolution of the seabed in combinations with subsurface flow localization.
  • Expertise in the coupling of fluid flow with mechanics and reactions using sophisticated Newton solvers including semi-smooth methods.
  • A proven track record of engaging with observational marine geosciences groups and an excellent publication record.
  • Scientific leadership documented in e.g. invited talks, international working groups, mobility, third-party funding, and the supervision of students.

Beneficial are:

  • Experience with high-performance open-source modeling packages e.g. DUNE or OpenFoam.
  • Leadership experience in large projects such as EU and industry consortia.
  • Experience in outreach and technology/knowledge transfer.

At a workplace, directly on the Kiel Fjord with many leisure and recreational opportunities, we offer you:

  • Good conditions for work-life balance: We offer, among other things, the possibility of mobile working and individual working time arrangements, vacation courses for the children of our employees, and good support in finding a place in a daycare center at the Kiel site
  • Support services for professional and personal life situations
  • An exciting work environment with the opportunity to provide important impetus for the development of sustainable solutions
  • Exciting topics in an international environment
  • Work in the field of marine and climate research, a forward-looking area with social significance
  • 30 vacation days + additional time off at Christmas Eve and New Year's Eve
  • Company pension plan and capital-forming benefits

This is an offer for a permanent position. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the class E14 TVöD-Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. Part-time employment is generally possible within the framework of suitable working time models, provided that the position is filled on a full-time basis.

GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel seeks to increase the proportion of female scientists and explicitly encourages qualified female academics to apply. GEOMAR is an equal opportunity employer and encourages scientists with disabilities to apply. Qualified disabled applicants will receive preference in the application process.
