starting in October 2024 (starting date negotiable).

Job Description:

The ERC CoG HighBorG focuses on climate-carbon dynamic reconstructions of past warm periods in our Geologic record within the Paleogene and Neogene, and exporation of Earth system response through Earth System modelling. As such, a strongly interdisciplinary group will aim at millennial scale reconstructions of seawater pH and atmospheric CO2 (through the boron isotope proxy), seawater temperature and ice sheet dynamics, as well as aspects of the marine carbon cycle. To achieve this, both established methods and new analytical techniques will be developed. The successful candidate for either a Technical Assistance or Engineer in the direction of chemistry involves development of new analytical methods for isotope geochemistry, streamlining techniques for isotope analyses, with potential additional work on foraminifera taxonomy and robotics in collaboration with colleagues in Europe. Responsibilities also include clean lab analytical chemistry (inorganic), processing of sediment cores and preparing and analyzing marine carbonates (corals and foraminifera) for isotopes and trace elements using the state of the art analytical laboratories at GEOMAR, maintaining clean lab supplies and space, and organizing and data archiving work.

Qualification:

Essential:

• Technical assistant with state recognition or comparable qualification (including for example a relevant Bachelor’s degree)
• previous experience in a chemistry lab
• eagerness to obtain expertise in operating mass spectrometers (sector field and multicollector)
• expertise in data processing, data quality evaluation
• excellent written and spoken English

Desirable:

• ability to trouble shoot and operate operate mass spectrometers, especially sector field and multicollector
• knowledge of statistical tools for data processing, and previous experience in data management
• experience in developing analytical methods
• creative and critical thinking skills, decision making and problem solving skills, motivation and curiocity
• able to work in a multidisciplinary research group, flexible in prioritising tasks
• planning and organising skills, being able to meet deadlines
• ability to program in Python, R, Matlab, or other

The position is available for a funding period of minimum 4 years. The salary depends on the qualification of the candidate and could be up to class 9b TVöD Bund of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position, the position can not be split. Flexible working time models are generally possible. The fixed-term contract shall comply with § 14 Teilzeit- und Befristungsgesetz (TzBfG).
