The Indian Ocean in a changing climate
The focal point of this research proposal is the study of the large-scale circulation of the Indian Ocean in response to climate change within an ocean modelling framework. Current research efforts concentrate primarily on the role of upper ocean circulation of the Indian Ocean in modulating climate variability, whereas not much is known about the Indian Ocean at depth. Addressing this knowledge gap is of paramount importance for a more complete understanding of the oceanic response to climate change. For this reason, the proposed study aims to investigate recent and near-future changes in the Indian Ocean circulation at depth, and to examine the role of the Indian Ocean as a connector between the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans. To achieve theses aims, an existing model configuration available at the host institution will be employed in addition to the development of a novel high-resolution nested model configuration. This work is timely for the host institution and the international community as it sets the stage for the upcoming International Indian Ocean Expedition II.
