Abstract:
The terminology “Canary current system” used to designate the Northeast Atlantic region situated between ~ 43°N (northern edge of the Iberic slope) and 10-12°N (Guinea Bissau) is somewhat misleading. Indeed it aggregates oceanic provinces that are different in terms of wind and oceanic flow regime, hydrology, and biogeochemical properties.
My talk is concerned with the part of the Canary current system located south of 21°N (Cape Blanc), i.e., the realm of the South Atlantic central Waters. Following the presentation of general considerations about this part of the world ocean, I will review its main distinctive features; underscore important differences with other upwelling sectors/systems; present the state of knowledge about regional implications of global changes.
Major knowledge gaps remain relative to other ocean regions but there is growing local interest for better ocean management and robust commitment of western countries in favour of capacity building. Overall, the situation calls for the co-design of ocean science plans suited to this West African context. Tentative guidelines for such plans will be proposed.
