Abstract:Madeira Economic Exclusive Zone (EEZ) has 446,000 Km² , which is ~13 times the size of the German EEZ in the North and Baltic Seas. My talk will summarize the last 20 years attempting to establish an oceanographic research group in an ultra -peripheral European Region, currently considering +20M investment in ocean science and technology. From the study of island wakes, air-sea interactions, and coastal dynamics, to the understanding of the impacts of climate change and the need to attend societal relevant issues. “Oceanography” has now entered the regional lexicon and become part of the vision for the future economic development of the island. The combined use of autonomous vehicles (USVs AUVs and UAVs), will help gather data for scientific, public, and private agendas contributing to the construction of the digital twin of a vast Atlantic region surrounding the archipelago.
