- Buescher-Ulbrich: Social Media and Digital Capitalism
Whatever its amenities, communicative capitalism (Dean) seizes, privatizes, and attempts to monetize social knowledge, communication, and creativityhumanitys general intellect (Marx) or cognitive commons (Hardt/Negri, Vercellone)without waiting for its crystallization in products of labor. It does not depend on the commodity-thing. Rather it directly commodifies and exploits the social relation at the heart of value and constitutes a new stage in the real subsumption of labor under capital. The digital, after all, is far from immaterial. Not to mention the material resources and often invisible labor force necessary to enable and sustain our online lives. We will use Deans work as an entry point for a discussion of the role of Big Tech and social media platforms in relation to capitalist accumulation, crisis, and new forms of class struggle. Students will be encouraged to study the changing material conditions, symbolic meanings and affective orientations of online communication. Required reading includes Cyber-Proletariat: Global Labour in the Digital Vortex (Dyer-Witheford 2015), Platform Capitalism (Srnicek 2016), Inhuman Power: Artificial Intelligence and the Future of Capitalism (Dyer-Witheford et al. 2019), Post Memes: Seizing the Memes of Production (Bown/Bristow 2019), Automation and the Future of Work (Benanav 2019) and Digitalschatten (Huck 2020).
