Inhalt
The course will be based on lectures, readings, discussions and short presentations by the students about pottery production in different periods, focusing on both hunter-gatherer and early farmer communities, but also touching some later periods, including the Bronze Age and Classical Antiquity. Discussions will focus on how the study of archaeological ceramics in combination with ethnographic case-studies in different regions of the world can answer questions about production and consumption, technical choices and socio-cultural identity, cross-cultural contact, information transmission and technological change in the distant past.

Inhalt
The course will cover the prehistory of south-eastern Europe from the Early Palaeolithic to the late Neolithic. Topics will include changes in settlement patterns, subsistence behaviour and social organisation, and the evolution of material culture and ritual life, as reflected in archaeological assemblages, in order to give a broader understanding of the development of the productive economy in Europe. It will focus on prominent aspects of the archaeological record in south-eastern Europe through detailed analyses of key sites in Greece, Northern Macedonia, Romania, Croatia, Serbia and Bulgaria. Comparisons will also be made with the archaeology of Central and Northwestern Europe.
