CIS , ESTOC, and PAP are all deep sites in over 3000 m of water. The difficult conditions throughout the year make them ideal for proving the technology and systems required to record real-time and delayed-mode data. Sensors are mounted at depths of upto 1000 m on the moorings to measure a wide range of physical, chemical and biological variables: Carbon Dioxide, Nutrient Concentrations, Temperature, Salinity, Pressure, Current Speed and Direction and Phytoplankton Concentration. These variables are are used by a range of scientific disciplines for, among other things, furthering our understanding of climate change.

These will in turn assist in constraining estimates of European and North American terrestrial (vegetation) sinks, using atmospheric inverse modelling techniques.

SFB460 Subproject A5: Uptake and Pathways of Anthropogenic Carbon DioxideProjektleitung: | Prof. Dr. Douglas W.R. Wallace | Beteiligte: | Prof. Dr. Pieter M. Grootes, Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Arne Körtzinger | Förderer: | Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) | Laufzeit: | 1.1.1996 - 31.12.2006 | Inhalt und Ziele: | This project investigates the quantitative uptake of anthropogenic carbon
dioxide (CO2) by the subpolar North Atlantic ocean. Knowledge of the
uptake of the atmospheric CO2 in this area is important for understanding
the global carbon budget. The storage of anthropogenic CO2 within the
North
Atlantic is relatively large on a unit-area basis. The key role of the
North Atlantic is explained by intermediate and deep water formation. Hence
the variability of the thermohaline circulation is directly linked to the
net-uptake of anthropogenic CO2.
In the context of climate change, feedback mechanisms between atmospheric
CO2 (the most important greenhouse gas) and thermohaline circulation
variability are likely. They need to be represented in sophisticated
computer models of ocean-atmosphere interactions such as employed in other
SFB 460 projects.
