- Inhalt
- This lecture provides students with a first look at the study of language. Next to learning about important general concepts (e.g. theoretical assumptions, communicative goals, linguistic signs), we will focus on the different (core) levels of linguistic analysis, namely semantics (the study of meaning), phonetics and phonology (the study of speech sounds and pronunciation), morphology (the structure of words and their formation), and syntax (grammar). Our aims are to (i) help students become accustomed to thinking linguistically and (ii) enable them to carry out basic linguistic investigations.
The lecture will be accompanied by the Basic Course, a practical class where students have the chance to put the knowledge they acquired to the test and conduct a variety of linguistic analyses. The contents of both the lecture and the Basic Course will be part of the final exam at the end of the term.
All materials will be made available on OLAT in due course.
