environmental changes due to natural climatic and hydrographic variability
and anthropogenic impact. We have monitored living benthic foraminiferal
assemblages in the Kiel Bight (SW Baltic Sea) in 2005 - 2007 under moderate
pollution from shipyards, harbours and intensive traffic. First results showed
that the dominant environmental forcing of benthic foraminifera is the food
supply in Kiel fjord and the salinity in Flensburg Fjord. A comparison with
previous data from the 1930s and 1960s revealed apparent changes in
species composition and population densities during the past decades. These
changes and a significant increase of test abnormality frequencies indicates
enforced environmental stress. In order to better constrain the reasons,
boundary conditions, and baselines for such alterations in foraminiferal
communities, surface sediment samples and short sediment cores are studied
for tracing the historical environmental changes.

Changes of the orbital (Milankovitch) parameters and their influence on paleoclimate, paleoceanology, and sedimentology during times of global warmth.Projektleitung: | Prof. Dr. W.W. Hay | Beteiligte: | Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Wolf-Christian Dullo, Dr. rer. nat. Sascha Flögel | Förderer: | Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) | Laufzeit: | 1.6.2003 - 30.5.2005 | Inhalt und Ziele: | Although it has long been recognized that the rhythmic sedimentation so often seen in Cretaceous sediments most likely reflects varying orbital (Milankovitch) parameters (eccentricity (100, 400 ka), obliquity (41 ka), and precession (19,23 ka)), our understanding of the mechanisms by which the insolation signal is translated into the observed changes in sedimentation is very poor. In order to investigate this relation we propose to conduct climate simulations to explore the effects of orbital variations on several Cretaceous paleogeographies and atmospheric compositions. Using a recently developed erosion-sedimentation module for the GENESIS Earth System Model we will be able to investigate quantitatively how the physical sediment record is affected by changing orbital setups. These results will then be compared with sedimentary and geochemical data of climate sensitive sediments from well-studied key profiles.
Recent studies have focused on the influence of extreme orbital configurations on the formation of sedimentary couplets (e. g. marly shales and limestones). New climate simulations for the Upper Cretaceous (Flögel et al., in prep.) show that both extreme and intermediate orbital configurations can cause major regional and global changes of the climate system. Preliminary studies suggest that these may indeed be the cause of the rhythmically bedded sediments. Prior studies of the paleoclimatology of the Cretaceous have focused on the Late Cretaceous strata, but for this study we are planning to extend the investigations into the Early Cretaceous, where Milankovitch cycles are extremely well preserved.

postglacial sea-level rise during the Last Deglaciation and the analysis of the
impact of sea-level and environmental changes on the reef development
during the Last Deglaciation.
Objectives of the project are:
To study the morphology of the reef foreslopes by using the small
research submersible JAGO in order to relate distinct morphological features
such as eroded reef terraces, wave notches, and drowned reefs to distinct
sea level positions. If dated, they are excellent markers for the
reconstruction of the sea level variations. The present day bathymetry of
these features will shed light on the debate of the differential sea level
variations on continental margins versus oceanic (volcanic) islands due to
isostatic rebound. Insitu sampling of coral material, which is another prime
target applying the research submersible JAGO, will provide the essential
archives to be explored for detailed paleobathymetrical studies in
combination with associated reef biota. Coral dating will provide a most
precise depth-age relationship in order to extend the already existing
sealevel curve back to the Last Glacial Maximum (LGM). This is very important
because then the Tahiti record can be used to better constrain the position of
the LGM sealevel.

massiven Kalkskeletten ergiebige Klimaarchive.

National Oceanography Centre Southampton | Stichwörter: | Meeresbiologie, Paläozeanologie, Meeresgeologie | Laufzeit: | 1.4.2005 - 31.3.2009 | Inhalt und Ziele: | HERMES is designed to gain new insights into the biodiversity,
structure, function and dynamics of ecosystems along Europe's
deep-ocean margin to underpin the future development of a
comprehensive European Ocean and Seas Integrated
Governance Policy. It represents the first major attempt to
understand European deep-water ecosystems and their
environment in an integrated way (geosphere, hydrosphere,
biospere and pan-European range), rather than at a specific site or
in one region. HERMES aims to compare and contrast selected
environments around the European margin from Norway to the
Black Sea, which, by virtue of their geographical locations, have
different environmental settings. In particular, HERMES will focus
on hotspots that are strongly physically mediated and associated
with dynamic geological and/or hydrogeological structures, such
as unstable slope systems, canyons, deep-water corals, cold
seeps and anoxic microbial systems. These important systems
require urgent study because of their possible biological fragility,
global relevance to carbon cycling and/or susceptibility to
catastrophic events and to global change. The pressure to improve
understanding of the deep-water ecosystems is great because
man's exploitation of the deep European margin is progressing
rapidly. Hydrocarbons are flowing from deep-sea sediments,
increasing numbers of communication cables are being laid and
traditional fish stocks have declined severely causing increased
bottom trawling to depths as great as 1500 m. To what extent do
these activities interfere with ecosystems, how vulnerable are
ecosystems to man's intrusions and how quickly are they able to
recover? How can we mitigate man's activities and reach a
sustainable balance in accord with international treaties? What is
the likely effect of global change on a ecosystem's ability to
provide 'goods and services' and on our attempts to manage
them? HERMES will address five key questions. Specifically, the
main objectives of HERMES are:
1. To understand better the natural drivers that control ecosystems
2. To understand better the biodiversity and ecosystem function of
hotspot ecosystems
3. To forcast changes in biodiversity and ecosystem functioning
linked to global change
4. To develop concepts and strategies for sustainable use of
marine resources
5. To provide an integrated framework for data management,
education and outreach

ISOLDE: Isotope Signature of calcareous Organisms from upper and Lower carbonate mound sedimentsProjektleitung: | Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Wolf-Christian Dullo | Beteiligte: | Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Anton Eisenhauer, Dr. rer. nat. Volker Liebetrau, Dr. rer. nat. Andres Rüggeberg | Stichwörter: | Geobiology, Geochemistry, Isotope Geology, Palaeoclimatology, Sclerochronology | Laufzeit: | 1.8.2007 - 31.7.2009 | Inhalt und Ziele: | The reconstruction of environmental parameters using well-developed
paleoceanographic proxies on calcareous tests and skeletons of benthic
organisms is the major aim of the proposed investigation. In particular, the
variability and dynamic of the intermediate water masses is still little
investigated in terms of high-resolution reconstructions. Therefore, we aim
to investigate on Challenger Mound sediment cores recovered during IODP
Expedition 307 stable isotopes (?13C, ?18O, ?88Sr) on cold-water corals and
benthic foraminifers to reconstruct the variability of intermediate water
temperatures on glacial-interglacial (forams) and seasonal (corals) timescales.
The proposed study focuses on an extended high-resolution record of the
Late Pleistocene (top 20 m) and the section of mound initiation and start-up
phase of coral growth (144.5149.5 m) of core 1317C. Age determinations
and stable isotope studies on benthic foraminifera will be used to identify
intervals of paleoceanographic relevance (glacial vs. interglacial, terminations,
before and after hiatuses, etc.) in both sections of interest. At these intervals,
high- resolution stable isotope analyses on well-preserved coral fragments
will give evidence of intermediate water temperature variability on a seasonal
scale. Additionally, these investigations will help to understand the role of
intermediate water masses of southern origin (Mediterranean, Bay of Biscay)
with their pole-ward transport and the colonization of cold-water corals
during their first introduction to the Porcupine Seabight (mound base), and
during the past glacial-interglacial cycles.

KOMEX II Kurile Okhotsk Sea Marine ExperimentProjektleitung: | Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Wolf-Christian Dullo | Förderer: | BMBF | | Ministry of Industry, Science and Technology of the Russian Federation | Laufzeit: | 1.5.2001 - 31.5.2004 | Inhalt und Ziele: | The Okhotsk Sea and the Kurile-Kamchatka Island Arc
represent a unique investigation area for marine
geosciences, because the interrelations of geosphere,
biosphere, kryosphere, hydrosphere and atmosphere
can be studied examplarily in this spatially restricted
area. The Okhotsk Sea and the adjacent regions
constitute a climate-controlling ecosystem of global
importance. It has the highest potential methane
production rate in the northern hemisphere. This is
controlled by the seasonal ice cover, which exists for an
unusually long time (approx. 7 months/ year) taking into
account the latitude of the Okhotsk Sea. It represents a
significant source region for the input of
climate-relevant gases into the atmosphere. The
Okhotsk Sea controls water mass formation in the
Pacific Ocean and essentially influences the climate
and paleo-climate of the latter. Thus, the Okhotsk Sea
offers the possibility to study the oceanographic and
climatic evolution of the Worlds biggest ocean
exemplarily and to integrate the results into global
climate modelling.
Based on the results of the predecessor project
KOMEX I, the overall aim of the joint Russian-German
project KOMEX II is to understand the mechanisms of
the complex climate-controlling system Okhotsk Sea
and to study its influence on chemical distribution,
chemical cycles, water mass formation, circulation, and
climate. The joint project KOMEX II is to continue the
successful cooperation of the Russian-German
working groups as the overall aim of the project can
only be achieved by applying a multidisciplinary
approach. The Russian-German working groups
comprise geologists, geochemists, geophysicists,
paleoceanologists, volcanologists, biogeochemists,
microbiologists, and oceanographers.
The main research topics of the joint project KOMEX II
concentrate on the following problems:
- development of a plate tectonic model of the evolution
of the Okhotsk Sea;
- characterization of the seismic facies and estimation
of the influence of regional tectonics on sedimentation
and venting processes, and distribution of the BSR;
- record of material and temporal variations in
magmatism and quantification of chemical and fluid
cycles in the Kurile-Kamchatka Subduction System;
- quantification of gas and fluid expulsion rates and of
biogeochemical material and energy tur-novers at
venting sites;
- geochemical, mineralogical and isotopic
characterization of the barite precipitates in the Derugin
Basin to reconstruct the history, intensity and
geochemical composition of the emanating fluids;
- quantification of the amount and type of gas hydrates,
their paleo-stability, temperature history and their
influence on the recent as well as the
paleo-environment;
- influence of the Amur River on sea ice formation,
productivity and sedimentation processes during the
last 50,000 years;
- paleoceanological significance of the Okhotsk Sea for
water mass formation and climatic evo-lution in the
Pacific Ocean.

Program
Recent discoveries of carbonate mounds covered with cold water
corals and related benthic communities along the NE Atlantic
Ocean continental margin (Porcupine Bight and north of Porcupine
Bank, southeast and southwest Rockall Trough Margin,
Norwegian margin) raises the question of their origin and
development. A major abjective of the studies is to establish the
forcing conditions of carbonate mound formation and to test the
hypothesis of a possible linkage between cold seeps and the
development of carbonate mounds, cold water benthic
communities and authigenic carbonate formation. This studies are
directed towards a definition of the geological, geochemical and
oceanographical conditions and processes forcing the
development of carbonate mounds and establishing the benthic
ecology and environmental conditions ofcarbonate mound and
cold water coral reef formation in contrasting areas of the NE
Atlantic Ocean and Mediterranean Sea. A third objective is to
establish the factors governing lithification and stabilisation of
carbonate mounds, and to use these as modern analogues of
fossil carbonate build ups. Comparison between recent and past
mound forcing conditions will allow development of a model of
mound genesis in relation to tectonic, sedimentological,
oceanographical and biological extant conditions.

Cluster comprises currently 10 projects | Laufzeit: | 1.2.2003 - 31.3.2006 | Inhalt und Ziele: | Projects by clusters
OMARC (Ocean Margin Deep-Water Research Consortium)
It was created from projects from FP5 and comprises currently 10 projects. The total EU contribution is 11.900.000 EUROs.
OMARC is to contribute to complete the inventory of mineral and biological resources of the European Ocean Margins in view of conducting safer and environment friendly exploration and exploitation of deep-water resources. In particular it will bring new elements on environmental aspects of deep-sea rich bearing hydrocarbon provinces and highly exploited fishery zone. The detail objective of the cluster is to improve through multidisciplinary Margin research the understanding on gas-hydrates, submarine slope stability, quaternary evolution of the European margin, cold-water coral reefs, and seafloor and sub-seafloor biosphere activity.
The cluster comprises the following projects: COSTA (Continental Slope Stability), STRATAGEM (Statigraphical Development of the Glaciated European Margin), ECOMOUND (Environmental Controls on Mound Formation along the European Margin), GEOMOUND (The Mound Factory - Internal Controls) and ACES (Atlantic Coral Ecosystem Study), DEEP-BUG (Development and assessment of new techniques and approaches for detecting deep sub-seafloor bacteria and their interaction with geosphere processes), HYDRATECH (Techniques for the
quantification of Methane Hydrate in European Ocean Margins), PROMESS (PROfiles across MEditerranean Sedimentary Systems), EURODELTA (European Co-ordination on Mediterranean and Black Sea Prodeltas), and EUROSTRATFORM.
To ensure a timely and effective transfer of results to relevant end-users and stakeholders, the Cluster will interact with Industry by establishing links with 4
ongoing Joint Industry Projects (JIPs) - SEABED project in Norway, GEML Network in the Faroes, WFA in the UK and PIP in Ireland - representing 27 European oil companies. Representatives from the whole hydrocarbon industry in Europe will also be invited to interact with the projects on a continuous basis. The Cluster is also strongly connected to the Ocean Drilling Programme (ODP), the international consortium conducting deep-sea seafloor sampling all around the world. One of the key technology issues for the future activities of this cluster is to access drilling means so that new data from the sub-seafloor are made available to validate the model (e.g. quantifying the quantity of gas-hydrates). The other technology required is the setting up for long periods of large monitoring/surveying/observing networks. The cluster is now collaborating with the STRATAFORM project in US in order to set-up a joint margin research project in the Mediterranean focussing on sediment
transport and accumulation with multiple potential application in the domain of natural hazards (catastrophic river discharge, flooding etc..)

Paleo-records of El Nino variability in corals from TahitiProjektleitung: | Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Wolf-Christian Dullo | Beteiligte: | Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Anton Eisenhauer, Sri Yudawati Cahyarini | Förderer: | Deutscher Akademischer Austauschdienst (DAAD) | Stichwörter: | ENSO, corals, geochemistry | Laufzeit: | 15.10.2002 - 18.7.2006 | Inhalt und Ziele: | ENSO is one of the pronounced signals identified in the global climate variability. This phenomenon is most well understood in high resolution time scale data such as annual and interannual. Corals will be useful to provide these data in longer time scales as their density banding carries isotopic and chemical tracers, that can be used for present and past reconstructions of climate parameter ( sea surface temperature, evaporation and precipitation).
We will use oxygen isotope data and Sr/Ca ratios in order to reconstruct past climate variability and ENSO dynamic from one of the most prominent ENSO instrument record site which is Tahiti. Our work is based on three coral cores. Finally we aimed for a comparative study with Indonesian sites.

University Bremen, Geosciences | | University Kiel, Inst. for Geosciences | Stichwörter: | Paläoklima, Paläoozeanologie | Laufzeit: | 1.3.2002 - 30.6.2004 | Inhalt und Ziele: | The Caribbean is an ideal place to study the sensitive
and delicate
Ocean/Climate System and its response to rapid
climate variations
during the last, early Glacial
(Dansgaard/Oeschger-Cycles) as well
as the resulting environmental changes at low
latitudes. The scope
of the project proposed
comprises studies on the interrelated processes of
global climate
variations, sea level changes, sea surface temperature
variations,
deep and intermediate water hydrography, and the
resulting
fluctuations in the assemblage composition of marine
biota in a
confined marginal sea. Emphasis is given to the
paleoceanographical processes during the late
Quaternary, in
particular during the highly dynamic Oxygen Isotope
Stages 2 and
3, and their comparison with the Holocene to recent
situation. Two
largely interrelated sub-projects, and an accompanied
pilot study
contribute to the
achievement of theses goals from different
perspectives with
innovative methods. The basis for the studies is a 37
days
research cruise with R/V Sonne (SO-164, 22nd Mai -
28th
June 2002) to the Caribbean. The marine-geological
expedition
comprises hydroacoustic surveys, sampling of bottom
sediments,
and long piston coring. The deployment of the
submersible JAGO
will allow a detailed mapping of sea bottom structures,
reef
morphology and well-defined sampling at shallow
depth around
the Windward Islands. Hydrocasts, water sampling and
plankton
tows will accomplish the sedimento-logical studies
with ground-
trouth data on the recent oceanography.
The three sub-projects concentrate on the following
topics:
Sub-project 1 (Dullo):
Sea-level variability and carbonate export around the
Lesser
Antilles
Subproject 2 (Wefer, Nürnberg):
Variability of paleo-sea surface temperatures and
variations in
thermocline depths in the Caribbean
Pilot study (Kuhnt, Schönfeld):
Impact of the Gulf-Stream on sedimentary
environments and
benthic communities in the southern Florida Straits

SFB754 - A6: Klimawandel und Sauerstoffminimum-Bedingungen auf 100 - 1000 Jahre ZeitskalenProjektleitung: | Prof. Dr. rer. nat. Ralph Schneider, Prof. Dr. rer. nat.

Wolf-Christian Dullo | Beteiligte: | Natasja Brughmans | Förderer: | Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft (DFG) Schwerpunktprogramm "Ocean Drilling Program" | Stichwörter: | Tasmanian Gateway, chemical paleoceanography, sedimentology, marine geology | Laufzeit: | 1.8.2002 - 31.7.2003 | Inhalt und Ziele: | Our studies focus on the southwestern Tasman Sea, a
key area between the Indian and Pacific oceans, which
allows to assess the role of Southern Ocean
paleoclimatic and paleoceano graphic interrelations
within the global context. The proposed research
project intends to spatially and temporally reconstruct
paleoceanographic and paleoclimatic changes during
the Pleistocene to late Holocene, and to relate these
changes to the dynamic oceanographic and climatic
evolution of the Southern Ocean.
Sedimentary records studied were recovered during
ODP Leg 189 from the western Tasmanian margin
(Site 1168), from Tasman Rise (sites 1170 and 1171),
and from the East Tasman Plateau (Site 1172). Various
geochemical and sedimentological proxy data will be
gathered, which mainly reflect marine produc-tivity,
terrigenous flux, sea surface temperature, and
carbonate dissolution.
Preliminary results indicate that the narrow study area
is a region of high oceanographic complexity. In spite of
the proximity of Leg 189 sites, all records show exciting
long-term and glacial/interglacial differences in proxy
data, which allow to reconstruct temporally and spatially
changing oceanographic frontal systems (i.e.
Subtropical Convergence, STC), the influence of the
East Australian Current, and variations in dust flux from
the Australian continent to the ocean.

Ca). Daneben soll der neu entwickelte geochemische und
paläozeanologische Proxie ?88Sr weiter entwckelt werden und
die Temperaturrekonstruktion einer rezenten und fossilen
Messreihe unterstützen.
