General remarks

General lecture period summer semester 2024: 15.04.2024 to 12.07.2024 (with winter semester 2023/2024, 2nd exam period: 02.04. - 13.04.2024 (link CAU) - In accordance with the CAU's examination procedure regulations, there are no courses in bachelor's and master's degree programs during the examination periods (few exceptions for first semester students)).

There is no general registration for courses - only for the exams at the end of the semester during registration phases (s.b.).

Examinations:

Typical examination procedure:     

  1. Examination registration: You register for the examinations that you would like to take in the next examination period or that are assigned to the next examination period (s.b. Examination Organisation Online (CAU)). In case of registration problems contact the Examination Office Biology.

    During the registration period for the 1st examination period please register for all the written or oral examinations you would like to take in the 1st examination period (or around and assigned to the 1st examination period), but also for the examinations that you have already taken or started (e.g. seminar papers) during the lecture period (including before the registration period), as well as for examinations (e.g. assignments) that are to be taken during the lecture-free period.

    Note: For examinations taken before the registration period, examination attendance is considered as binding registration. You must also register for these examinations during the registration period, however, so that your academic achievements can be recorded in the system at a later stage.

  2. Checking admission: Two days before the start of the examination period, you check whether you have been granted admission to the examinations you have registered for.
  3. Examination attendance: You take the examinations during the examination period.
  4. Checking results: You check the results entered by the examiners.

  • Registering for examinations / Cancelling registrations
  • Information on registered examinations (checking admissions. Information on examination dates, times and rooms)

Keep in mind - it's your responsibility not to miss any fixed dates and/or deadlines.

Practical courses, practical exercises and some seminars have compulsory attendance (FPO).

Make sure that you sign the attendance list every course day!

Framework of courses:

  1. All of the five first semester modules are compulsory.
  2. Passed core modules of the first semester (MNF-bioc-101 and MNF-bioc-102) are important for the understanding for the advanced modules of the second semester in summer (e.g. MNF-bioc-201 and MNF-bioc-202).
  3. Passed exams of ALL compulsory modules of first and second semester are the  indispensable prerequisite for the exam of the core module of third semester in winter (MNF-bioc-301).
  4. A short presentation of your planned master's thesis ("proposal day") and a passed exam at the end of MNF-bioc-301 is the prerequisite to register your thesis (MNF-bioc-401) at the examination office.

Considerations concerning using first or second exam phase (CAU).

Exams are generally scheduled only for the semester where the modules are taught.

  • There are no exams for winter semester modules MNF-bioc-1xx and MNF-bioc-3xx in summer semester.
  • There are no exams for summer semester modules MNF-bioc-2xx in winter semester.

MSc. Biological Oceanography - second semester - lecture plan summer semester 2024 (click on "Stundenplan" for a complete time table).  All seven different possible practical parts in three blocks of MNF-bioc-202 are shown which looks heavily loaded - but you have to choose only two resp. three non overlapping parts.

As you can take many optional modules outside of our curriculum (CAU-wide choices) these are not included in the example lists and timetables.

Inhalt
Im ersten Block des Seminars wird ein Überblick über die Geschichte des Konflikts seit 1947 vermittelt. Über den Sechs-Tage-Krieg hin zur Ersten Intifada, dem Osloer-Friedensprozess und der Al-Aksa-Intifada, nähern wir uns dem gegenwärtigem Konfliktgeschehen. Der zweite Bock fokussiert auf die internen Konfliktakteure, Israel und die palästinensischen Gruppen, insbesondere die Hamas. Dabei wird sowohl die Komplexität der israelischen Gesellschaft als auch die Spaltung der palästinensischen Nationalbewegung in den Blick genommen. Der dritte Block beschäftigt sich mit der Rolle externer Akteure, insbesondere der USA und dem Iran. Auf theoretischer Ebene werden wir uns mit den Potentialen und Grenzen der Theorien der Internationalen Beziehungen in Hinblick auf die Konfliktforschung beschäftigen und das Konzept der neuen Kriege diskutieren.

Prüfungsvorleistung: Kurzreferat auf Basis eines 5-seitiges Handout in Kleingruppen sowie Gruppendiskussion.

Prüfungsleistung: Hausarbeit in Form von drei Essays

Inhalt
While the European Union has long been celebrated as a successful peace project, the EU's external border policies, Brexit, and anti-European populism in its member states are increasingly the focus of attention. The crises of recent years and the changing security policy climate raise the question of what role the EU should play in world politics and how resiliently it can react to its internal challenges.
The first part of the seminar addresses the historical development of the EU, its institutions, and procedures. The second part is devoted to theoretical approaches to European integration studies. The third part will focus on current developments and challenges such as Brexit and its consequences, Euroscepticism and populism, current accession procedures, and the EU's common migration and security policy.

Learning objectives: Students will know the historical development of the EU as well as its institutions and procedures. Selected theories of European integration are known and can be used to analyze current problems.

Competence goals: Students learn to compare theoretical approaches based on meta-theoretical considerations. They practice confident and structured presentations. The basics of scientific work will be deepened by writing a term paper or a portfolio.

The class will be taught in English and presentations will be held in English. Portfolios and term papers can be written in English or German.

Inhalt
Während die Europäische Union lange als erfolgreiches Friedensprojekt gefeiert wurde, rücken der Umgang mit den EU-Außengrenzen, dem Brexit sowie anti-europäischen Populismus in den Mitgliedsstaaten zunehmend in den Blick. Die Krisen der letzten Jahre und das veränderte sicherheitspolitische Klima werfen die Frage auf, welche Rolle die EU im globalen Gefüge spielen soll und wie resilient sie auf interne Krisen reagieren kann.

Im ersten Teil des Seminars werden zunächst die historische Entwicklung der EU, ihre Organe und Verfahrensweisen behandelt. Der zweite Teil der Veranstaltungen widmet sich den theoretischen Ansätzen der Europäischen Integrationsforschung. Im dritten Teil werden aktuelle Entwicklungen und Herausforderungen wie der Brexit und seine Folgen, Euroskeptizismus und Populismus, aktuelle Beitrittsverfahren sowie die gemeinsame Migrations- und Sicherheitspolitik der EU in den Blick genommen.

Lernziele: Die Studierende kennen die historische Entwicklung der EU sowie ihre Organe und Verfahrensweisen. Ausgewählte Theorien der europäischen Integration sind bekannt und können zur Analyse aktueller Probleme herangezogen werden.

Kompetenzziele: Die Studierenden lernen theoretische Ansätze anhand metatheoretischer Überlegungen zu vergleichen. Sie üben sicheres und strukturiertes Präsentieren ein. Die Grundlagen des wissenschaftlichen Arbeitens werden durch das Verfassen einer Hausarbeit oder einer Portfolioleistung vertieft.

Inhalt
Democracy promotion and protection is a cornerstone of the EU’s external relations. The recent “third wave of autocratization” (Lührmann & Lindberg 2019) challenges existing modes and models of EU democracy promotion beyond the existing academic critique of the EU’s polices. In this seminar, firstly, the principles and tools of EU democracy promotion are introduced, and the critique levied against these practices is discussed. Secondly, we explore the EU’s reaction to autocratization in its neighborhood, with a focus on the cases of Türkiye, Tunisia and Serbia. In the third part of the seminar, we discuss autocratization within the EU, namely the cases Poland and Hungary, and how their backsliding processes effect EU democracy promotion and protection.
