The circulation in tropical Atlantic will be studied using acoustically tracked RAFOS floats that drift along shallow isopycnic surfaces (between 100m and 400m). The observed float trajectories will be compared with results of different models regarding the thermohaline subtropical-tropical cell (STC). Of particular importance are the different pathways of southern hemisphere water toward the equator and the eastward flow within the zonal undercurrents that supply the eastern upwelling regions. The RAFOS floats will yield highly resolved data of the intraseasonal and seasonal variability of the velocity and density fields that are necessary for a better understanding of differences between Eulerian and Lagrangian circulation. The RAFOS floats will be deployed during Meteor cruise M62/2 in August 2004.
