Kiel: Future Ocean Dialogue

20 - 28 June 2015 at the Kiellinie

The Exhibition “Future Ocean Dialogue“ of the Cluster of Excellence “The Future Ocean” and the GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre For Ocean Research Kiel can be seen for the first time at the Kiel Week this year.

From the 20th to the 28th of June, from 12 pm to 18 pm daily the exhibition will inform visitors about key topics of Kiel’s marine research, such as sustainable fisheries, the exploration of the coasts, ocean acidification, the importance of mineral resources and the impact of waste in the ocean. Visitors will get an insight into the interdisciplinary research of more than 200 scientists regarding the condition of the oceans in the past, the present and future. Vividly and playfully, the visitors can dive into the world of the oceans with the help of interactive exhibits, real robots and authentic models and moreover, learn about recent technical gadgets being used in marine research nowadays.

The world‘s oceans have a big influence on the climate of the earth and supply nutrition and raw materials. At the same time they entail risks: the increasing rate of overfishing threatens fish stocks, the acidification of the oceans changes ecosystems and the rise of sea level poses major challenges to coastal regions. The “Future Ocean Dialogue” aims to draw attention to these dangers and to inspire the dialogue with society for a sustainable use of the ocean and its resources in the future.

Last year the travelling exhibition “Future Ocean Dialogue” made its debut in Brazil. After its return in January and several weeks of intensive preparation it celebrated its premiere in Germany on the occasion of the 350th anniversary of Kiel University on May 22nd.
