High distinction for Kiel marine researcher
H.S.H. Prince Albert II of Monaco appoints Professor Dr. Peter Herzig a Knight of the Order of Saint-Charles
The Principality of Monaco honours Professor Dr. Peter Herzig, the former director of GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel, with the admission to the Order of Saint-Charles, founded in 1858. The appointment as Knight of the Order of Saint-Charles honours Prof. Herzig’s engagement for the cooperation in marine research between the Oceanographic Museum in Monaco and the Kiel Research Centre. The Order of Charles is the only award that the Principality also grants to people from abroad.
During the ceremony at the Palace in Monaco on 17 November 2021, Professor Herzig extended greetings from Team GEOMAR and emphasised the great interest in continuing the close cooperation.
A connection between the Principality of Monaco and the city of Kiel already exists for more than one hundred years. Prince Albert I, a pioneer of marine sciences, was a frequent and regular visitor to the Kiel Week. The reception for H.S.H. Prince Albert II by GEOMAR Director Professor Dr. Katja Matthes and the joint christening of the Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) "AUV Albert Ier de Monaco" in September 2021 strengthened these relations.
