Phd Students of the Helmholtz Association meet in Kiel
2. NextGen@Helmholtz Conference from July 5-7 at GEOMAR
Especially in the natural sciences a scientific career starts with the doctoral (PhD) thesis. Within a time frame of three to five years, the PhD students perform their first comprehensive research projects at the current edge of scientific knowledge in their field of research. What used to be strongly focused on the scientific subject is nowadays much broader. In addition to purely scientific content, important "soft skills" such as improvement of presentation techniques, media training or the provision of leadership skills are increasingly importance for a successful PhD. In addition, establishing networks with colleagues in other institutes and disciplines is extremely helpful for a future career in research.
Therefore the Helmholtz Association is offering a new interdisciplinary approach to their graduate students through the NextGen@Helmholtz Conference. After last year's premiere at the Helmholtz Center for Infection Research (HZI) in Braunschweig, the meeting will take place for the second time. This year’s host is the most recent member of the Helmholtz Association, GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel. "We are looking forward to three exciting days with colleagues from quite different disciplines, which we have under the roof of the Helmholtz Association," says Meike Klischies, from GEOMAR, who organizes the event together with her team.
"Of course, the town of Kiel is worth a trip itself, but in addition we have exciting things to offer and obviously we can promise that the ‘supporting’ program and networking will not be too short," Klischies continues. "Thanks to the support by the Helmholtz Association and in particular to Helmholtz-Juniors the participation fee could be limited to just 50 Euro", her colleague Anna Canning adds.
