Teaching

The professors and senior scientists of the department of marine geodynamics teach at Christian-Albrechts-University of Kiel. Their lectures are part of the undergraduate course Physics of the Earth System and the graduate courses Master of Geophysics and Master of Marine Geosciences. More information is available at https://www.ifg.uni-kiel.de/en/studies. We offer MSc and BSc thesis supervision. Please get in touch if you would like to learn more about possible thesis projects. Either check with the most appropriate researcher or with Heidrun Kopp (hkopp(at)geomar.de) or Christian Berndt (cberndt(at)geomar.de).

OBS-Thermo

Projektleitung:Dr. rer. nat. Jörg Bialas
Beteiligte:Dr. rer. nat. Sven Petersen, Dr. Thomas Feseker
Förderer:Cluster of Excellence "Future Ocean"
Stichwörter:hydrothermal fields;OBS;temperature sensor;ROV;micro-seismicity;vent fluid
Laufzeit:1.11.2008 - 31.12.2009
Inhalt und Ziele:OBS-Thermo sets out to overcome the mismatch in observation times of different sensors and to build a first base of combined and co-registered measurements at hydrothermal fields. For this purpose an OBS shall be extended with a temperature sensor and be deployed at 5°S on the southern Mid-Atlantic Ridge in 2009. With the ROV controlled deployment of the thermal sensor in the chimney of a black smoker the OBS-Thermo will co-record local seismicity and vent fluid exit temperature and hence correlate thermal events with increased fluid flow, which should be recorded as increased micro-seismicity. This system will be the base of a new local network of sensors independent from external power supply to be used in future seafloor hydrothermal research.
