Inhalt
The course language is English. While students are expected to participate in class in English, written examinations can be written either in English or German. Additional German study material is provided as a supplement to the English course readings where available.

The course discusses the relationship between identity and power. In this semester, the introductory course (Einführungsseminar) focuses on the question which role power plays for identity formation. In the following semester, the advanced course (Vertiefungsseminar) will look at concepts that address the destabilization of identities (e.g., insecurity or trauma).

In a first step, the course introduces students to different understandings of identity and power, which revolves around the initial question: Which kinds of identity and power are there? Against this background, we will discuss three prominent theories that address the relationship between identity and power: Michel Foucault, Judith Butler and Ernesto Laclau. In a last step, the courses addresses methodical approaches, which enables students to utilize suitable methods in their analyses of identity and power. This includes deconstruction as a method for criticizing binary self/other relationships as well as discourse analyses adapted to the discussed theories.
