Polarized light microscopy

The Marine Mineral Resources Group maintains two Zeiss polarisation microscopes. These are available to the research unit MuHS and other GEOMAR employees on request. The older device is a Zeiss Axioplan 2 imager with an older Canon digital camera and the possibility of polarisation microscopy in reflected light as well as transmitted light (rotary stage). The second, newer device is a Zeiss Axio.Imager Z2m purchased in 2022, which also offers the possibility of polarised reflected and transmitted light microscopy. This device can be equipped with a motorised scanning stage or a manual rotary stage. Images can be captured using a Zeiss Axiocam 712 camera and processed on the connected powerful workstation using the ZEN software package. The camera offers a maximum image resolution of 12 MP. In addition to detailed individual images, images with extended depth of field (Z-stacking) and raster images of entire thin sections are possible.
