Abstract:

The Arctic amplification is not zonally symmetric, and not seasonally persistent either. Notable fact is that the northeastern Canada and western Greenland (NCWG) regions shows one of the local Arctic warming maxima, and the maxima is persistent throughout the year unlikely to the other Arctic regions. Using a dataset from a multi-model coordinated AGCM simulations as well as reanalysis and observed data, we show that the maximum decadal warming over the NCWG region is largely driven by the local changes of the SST/ice changes. The SST/ice changes are likely associated with the multi-decadal SST variability in the north Atlantic. Local sea-ice melting associated with anthropogenic warming could have also amplified the warming, while the remote influence from Tropical SST change is not likely predominant.
