Andreas Engel, Institute for Atmospheric and Environmental Sciences, Goethe University Frankfurt, Germany: "Can trace gas observations constrain stratospheric change?"

11:00 h, Lecture Hall, Düsternbrooker Weg 20

Abstract:

There is a general tendency in climate models to predict an acceleration of the stratospheric Brewer-Dobson circulation due to the changing climate. Most models agree that such a change should already have occurred. The effect of the circulation (transport and mixing) on trace gases in the stratosphere will be discussed. We will present some results showing mean age of air in the stratosphere derived from observations of very long-lived trace gases, which cannot confirm such an acceleration. The usefulness of other tracers, including chemically active tracers, for the investigation of changes in stratospheric circulation will be discussed and results from both models and observations will be presented to discuss the usefulness of different tracers for the investigation of changes in stratospheric transport.
