Thomas Reichler, University of Utah, USA: "Why the stratosphere matters"

Tuesday, June 18, 2013, 11.45 h, Großer Konferenzraum

Abstract:

Past research made it clear that the stratosphere forms an important component of climate and that stratospheric variability has implications for the surface. This influence is related to a dynamical coupling between the stratosphere and the troposphere, and it is relevant on time scales ranging from seasons to climate. In this talk I present evidence that the stratosphere even has the potential to affect the ocean and its circulation, which has consequences for decadal climate predictability. In addition, I propose an important chemical-dynamical feedback: this feedback is positive and leads to a considerable increase of climate variability in the latest CMIP5 models.
