May 6-9, 2013: 20th Session of the CLIVAR Scientific Steering Group

This year’s annual Scientific Steering Group meeting (on invitation only) of the WCRP CLIVAR Project (Climate Variability and Predictability) will be held in Kiel.

About 40 scientists, representing different aspects of the programme, are expected to participate. Together they will decide on a new scope for CLIVAR. Prof. Dr. Martin Visbeck, GEOMAR, and Lisa Goddard (IRI, Columbia University) are co-chairs of this group.

CLIVAR is one of the four projects of the World Climate Research Programme (WCRP) which in turn is supported by WMO (World Meteorological Organisation), IOC (Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission), and ICSU (International Council for Science). CLIVAR focuses on climate relevant processes and contributions to the ocean and atmosphere in the Earth system. CLIVAR works towards a better understanding of our climate system with a particular emphasis on seasonal to multidecadal variability. Additional interest is placed on variability in climate change, so a balanced programme of experimental and modeling work has been proposed to address regional as well as global aspects. A special objective of CLIVAR lies in observing the mechanisms and predictability of natural climate variability in relation to climate change.
