NOAA/Atlantic Oceanographic and Meteorological Laboratory Physical Oceanography Division, Miami, FL Ocean-atmosphere interactions in extreme wind and waves using uncrewed surface vehicles There is very limited knowledge of ocean-atmosphere interactions in the extreme conditions of tropical and extratropical cyclones, due in large part to difficulties obtaining direct measurements near the ocean's surface. Such measurements are crucial for advancing process-oriented understanding, improving weather prediction, and assessing storms' ocean impacts on weather and climate-relevant timescales. This presentation will discuss results from experimental missions to send uncrewed surface ocean vehicles (saildrones) into hurricanes in the tropical North Atlantic. Future plans for uncrewed surface ocean measurements in extreme conditions will also be discussed.
