This video invites you to accompany an international group of 22 scientists led by GEOMAR on their expedition MSM126 “Jellyweb Madeira” with the German research vessel MARIA S. MERIAN into the deep sea of the North Atlantic off the south coast of Madeira Island.
🦑 It is curiosity about the unknown, the little described biodiversity and habitats, and the search for a new understanding of the food webs in the deep sea that drives the researchers forward. During the expedition, a particular focus lies on delicate organisms like jellyfish, siphonophores, salps and chaetognaths, about which far too little is known to date, but which may play important roles as predators and prey and in carbon sequestration in the deep sea. The video includes unprecedented views of the underwater habitats of Madeira down to 2000 m depth and their fascinating inhabitants, and impressions of scientific work on board during the expedition, and highlights the scientific questions that the team hopes to answer.
📹 The video was produced by Uli Kunz and shows impressions of the MSM126 expedition, funded by the German Science Foundation and the German BMBF, which took place from February 9 to March 4, 2024. As an underwater photographer and filmmaker, Uli Kunz accompanied the researchers on board for a few days and captured the exciting moments.
