International Day of Women and Girls in Science 2025

👩‍🔬 11 February is the International Day of Women and Girls in Science

🌏 According to the UNESCO Institute for Statistics, women and girls make up half of the world's population, but only around a third of all researchers. This statistic shrinks further when looking at high-level positions in science.

GEOMAR actively supports women and girls in science. Equal opportunities are not only a question of fairness, but also a decisive success criterion for Germany as a centre of science. Since 2013, GEOMAR has had a Women's Executive Board (WEB), which is committed to promoting the career paths and prospects of women.

🎤 This year, we interviewed schoolgirls and alumnae from the Friday Research Club - a regular feature of GEOMAR's school programmes. Young people from the 8th grade onwards are given the opportunity to pursue research questions in the field of marine and climate sciences under supervision.
