Kiel Outdoor Benthocosms

The future Baltic Sea in miniature format

Using large plastic tanks, the so-called Kiel Outdoor Benthocosms (KOBs) scientists from GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel want to take a closer look at the future of the Baltic Sea.

Inside the KOBs they are able to manipulate temperature and acidity of the water. During the experiments scientists are testing the effect of warming on a whole ecosystem over different sesaons of the year. These long-term experiments result in a more sound glimpse into the future of marine ecosystems.
