GEOMAR Helmholtz Centre for Ocean Research Kiel is a foundation under public law jointly financed by the Federal Republic of Germany (90%) and the State of Schleswig-Holstein (10%). It is one of the internationally leading institutions in the field of marine research.

GEOMAR is coordinating an initiative to realize the major international research project FUTURO (Future of Tropical Tropical Upwelling Regions in the Atlantic Ocean), at the center of which is a large-scale one-year field study off West Africa in the tropical North-East Atlantic. The core phase of the project is in the period 2027-2029.

The GEOMAR Directorate and the Scientific Director of the FUTURO initiative are offering the position of a

Scientific Project Manager (m/f/d)

starting at the earliest possible date.

Job Description:

  • Planning and preparation of the FUTURO project in close cooperation with the scientific project management, e.g. development and monitoring of a FUTURO roadmap and support in the conception and implementation of the FUTURO projects and field studies
  • Regular coordination of project progress with the GEOMAR Directorate
  • Planning and monitoring of financial and organisational project initiation, preparation of reports
  • Independent coordination and communication with national and international stakeholders
  • Identification and support in the acquisition of national and international funding
  • Support in the preparation of presentations and publications

Your Profile:

  • Completed university degree, preferably in natural sciences
  • Several years of professional experience in the field of scientific project management of international (large-scale) projects
  • Relevant experience in national and/or international research funding and in the preparation of funding applications
  • Experience with professional project management tools (e.g. OpenProject or similar)
  • Completed university degree, preferably in natural sciences
  • Very good communication skills in German and English; spoken and written
  • Willingness to undertake international business trips

Further desirable are:

  • Experience in cooperation with African institutions
  • French and Portuguese language skills
  • Good communication and organisational skills as well as the ability to work independently
  • Ability to work in a team, enthusiasm and assertiveness

The position is available for a duration of 24 months. An extension is intended. The salary depends on qualification and could be up to the E13 (TVöD-Bund) of the German tariff for public employees. This is a full-time position. Part-time employment is generally possible within the framework of suitable working time models, provided that the position is filled on a full-time basis. The place of work is GEOMAR in Kiel.
