Ocean Acidification

In the BMBF-funded joint project BIOACID (Biological Impacts of Ocean Acidification), which ran for three three-year funding periods and was coordinated by Ulf Riebesell, our working group investigated

  • the sensitivity of physiological processes at the organism level
  • the evolutionary adaptation potential
  • the effects of organism reactions on trophic relationships
  • the consequences of ecological changes for biogeochemical cycles

Methodologically, we used

  • rate measurements with pure cultures
  • long-term experiments over 2000 generations to clarify the evolutionary adaptation potential
  • incubation experiments at the population level
  • mesocosm experiments with a volume of 60,000 liters at the ecosystem level
