Benthic Biogeochemistry

Ocean acidification, deoxygenation and warming not only influence biogeochemical processes in seawater, but also have direct and indirect effects on processes at the seabed (e.g. benthic carbon cycle). In addition, fluid fluxes from deeper subsurface which, depending on the local geology, can induce changes at the seabed (e.g. by carbon storage in the subsurface).

With this in mind, we take sediment and water samples on our research cruises around the world and install observation stations on the seabed. The samples recovered are analysed directly on board the ships and in our laboratories at GEOMAR. This data is then coupled with complex numerical models in order to better understand the mechanisms of the investigated processes and to be able to make predictions.
