GAME-FAQs:

1. What are the GAME research foci?

GAME concentrates on the coastal regions of our planet, as they are of paramount importance for humanity: They store major food resources, provide carbon dioxide sinks and stabilise coastal lines. Already, more than 50% of the world’s population live close to the sea and this percentage is rising continually. For this reason, coastal seas are most affected by global change effects such as climate warming, sea level rise, species invasions and intense human use. This can have far-reaching consequences for the ways in which these ecosystems function.

GAME studies the effects of global change on coastal seas. Several projects, for example, have studied factors influencing their biodiversity. GAME is also focusing on issues in invasion ecology and studies the ways in which environmental changes affect the interaction between species.

2. What is the next project about?

New GAME-topics are announced on the GAME website, on our Facebook page and on oceanblogs.org/game.

3. Where can non-german students apply?

At our local GAME partner scientists (see our partners and information for students).

4. Where can German students apply?

In this context, German stands for all students who are enroled at a German, Austrian or Swiss University. The actual nationality of the applicant is irrelevant. Please apply to GAME directly (read more).

5. Who can apply?

Applicants should be MSc students with a background in biology, ecology or environmental sciences, who are looking for a Master project in marine experimental ecology. Alternatively, undergraduates or post-graduates who volunteer for a research internship can also participate in GAME. Applicants must be enrolled at either a German, Austrian or Swiss university, or at one of our partner universities. In all cases the actual nationality of the applicant is irrelevant.

6. Do I need an English assessment test (TOEFL, IELTS)?

No. However, good English skills are required. German students may need to pass such a test when applying for a scholarship from German funding agencies (e.g. PROMOS).

7. When does the application deadline end?

Two months before a project starts. This will be announced on our website.

8. When do projects start?

Projects start in the beginning of March of each year. At the earliest, applications can be handed in 12 months in advance of the project start.

9. What is the general schedule of a GAME project?

GAME projects have a sandwich structure: a) Preparation at GEOMAR (4 weeks in March); b) practical research work at one of our partner institutes (April - September); c) Joined meta-analysis of the global data set at GEOMAR (October-December).

10. When do projects end?

Around the 20th of December.

11. Where can incoming students find accommodation in Kiel?

Accomodation for incoming students during theiy stay in Kiel is organized by GAME. Accomodation costs, however, need to be paid from the scholarship granted by GAME.

12. Where can German students find accommodation in Kiel?

For their time in Kiel, German students are asked to arrange accommodation by themselves. For their stay abroad, the local GAME supervisors can arrange accomodation for them if this is wanted. Generally, accommodation costs for German students are not covered by GAME. However, students enroled at German universities are encouraged to apply for a DAAD stipend (PROMOS programme).

13. Do incoming students need insurance during their stay in Germany?

Yes. They need health, accident and  third party liability insurance. In case the students do not have such insurance(s) (e.g. provided by their home unis), GAME arranges them. Costs need to be paid from the scholarship granted by GAME.

14. Do German students need additional insurance during their stay in the partner county?

GAME strongly advises German particiants to have international health insurance!

  • You would like to write your Master's thesis on a marine ecology topic, complete the experimental phase in binational teams of two abroad and be comprehensively introduced to working as a scientist? Then apply now for the participation in GAME 2025.
From March 2025, GAME will investigate the influence of nocturnal artificial light on the growth of epiphytes growing on macroalgae.
Information on the procedure, participation requirements and why GAME could be interesting for you can be found here ►

  • Completed GAME projects

All GAME projects are presented here in the overview. As of 2012, there is a final report in German for each project, which can be downloaded as a PDF.

There are also blogs by the teams from the various project years at www.oceanblogs.org.

  • Since 2011, GAME has been supported and advised by a Board of Trustees.

  • We would like to thank all sponsors who have made GAME 2022 possible through their financial commitment!

    Become a supporter of GAME!

From 2002 to 2008, GAME was funded by the Mercator Foundation and subsequently by the Kiel University Foundation and GEOMAR. Since 2011, supporters from the German foundation landscape, from the (predominantly maritime) industry, as well as private donors could be gained.

To ensure that the program can continue in the future, we are looking for additional supporters who would like to get involved in marine research, the education of students and the international networking of scientists. Make your donation possible for future students from all over the world to participate in this international training program that combines applied research with excellent education.
