ORCID

Associate your name with your research

What is ORCID?

The Open Contributor and Researcher ID is an internationally recognized personal identifier for researchers. It connects researchers with their research. GEOMAR has been a member of ORCID since 2018. Use ORCID so that you and GEOMAR can benefit from the advantages!

Your advantages

ORCID helps to improve the visibility of your research, ensures more networking and saves you a lot of time and work.

When publishing and on the Internet

You are easy to find, despite name variations, name changes and different spellings.
When communicating with publishers, simply state your ORCID iD. If you have granted the publisher the rights to do so, they have access to all the information they need via your ORCID profile.
Your publications are clearly assigned to you and can be found at any time, even if they are not listed in databases such as Web of Science or Scopus.
You can use your ORCID iD and your profile stored there for the rest of your life, regardless of employer and research area.
Your publication list in ORCID is always up to date, as long as you report your publications in OceanRep and have linked your ORCID profile to OceanRep.

For funding

Use your ORCID iD for applications and reports for research funders or third-party funders. This significantly reduces your workload, as you can grant funding bodies access to your profile and the research work documented there.

In everyday scientific life

If you include your ORCID iD in your scientific communication, you can provide colleagues, organizers and participants with the necessary information via your ORCID profile.

Your rights

You have full control!

With the exception of your name and your ORCID iD (both are always public), you can manage all profile details with regard to their visibility.
You determine which rights you grant to linked databases, so-called trusted parties or trusted organizations (GEOMAR, Crossref, Web of Science, etc.).
You can check, change and revoke granted rights at any time in your ORCID profile via account settings.

Getting started with ORCID

Here are 3 tips on how you can make ORCID work best for you.

1. register

  •     Only create an ORCID iD for yourself. If you are not sure whether you already have one, you can search for your name at ORCID.
  •     Enter all spellings and variants of your name in your profile, including your maiden name if applicable.
  •     In general, the more information you enter, the more meaningful your profile will be!

2. activate data synchronization

Activate the automatic synchronization of your publications. To do this, link OceanRep, Crossref and DataCite to your ORCID profile. We also recommend linking Web of Science and Scopus if your publications are listed in these databases.

  •     Link OceanRep with ORCID:

If you have created an ORCID ID and would like to link all publications - including those that are not in WoS (non-peer-reviewed, poster, patent, etc.) - you can do this easily as follows:

Call up your own publication list in OceanRep using “Browse - author”, select Export: BibTex and export.

You can then import the BibTex file into ORCID!

  •     Link Crossref, DataCite, Web of Science, Scopus etc. with ORCID

Log in to ORCID and use the “Search & link” function in your ORCID profile (under “Works” -> “Add works”: “Search & link”).

Web of Science is linked via the ResearcherID. You will find an entry for this ResearcherID under “Search & link”.

3. use ORCID iD

Please use your ORCID iD in your scientific activities - especially when

  •     contact with publishers (they report your ORCID iD e.g. to Crossref!),
  •     when contacting funding bodies,
  •     at congresses,
  •     on presentation slides,
  •     on your website,
  •     in the footer of your emails and
  •     if you can enter your ORCID iD in Internet and research forums.

Glossary

Crossref and DataCite are non-profit organizations that assign identifiers (DOI) for full texts and research data. If your publication data at Crossref and DataCite contain your ORCID iD, your publication data will be automatically imported into your profile there after linking both databases with ORCID. Therefore, always use your ORCID iD when contacting publishers, as the publishers report this to Crossref and DataCite.

The ResearcherID and the Scopus Author ID are the identifiers for authors in the Web of Science and Scopus databases. Both personal identifiers are linked to a database or company and, unlike ORCID, are therefore not independent and valid across institutions and products.

To turn these organizations/databases into trusted parties, register directly with them:

Further information

The GEOMAR publication server “OceanRep” uses your ORCID to better identify your publications. Please always enter your ORCID when registering a new publication or a bibliography entry on OceanRep.

The GEOMAR library will be happy to provide you with further information and assistance on the topics of affiliation and author identifiers. Please contact the librarians at bibliotheksleitung(at)geomar.de.

The information was taken from the library of the Ruhr University Bochum (RUB) with kind permission and adapted for GEOMAR.
