A2 – Exploration and Characterization of Gas Hydrate Deposits

Sub-project A2 surveys the gas hydrate reservoir and describes its properties in detail using seismic and electromagnetic methods. These comprise of ship-towed profiling devices (MCS, P-cable and CSEM) and systems deployed on the seafloor (OBS, OBEM, MT stations). The novel joint inversion algorithm combines the high-resolution seismic data with the hydrate-sensitive EM data to quantify the sub-seafloor gas hydrate distribution in unrivalled quality. The precise geological and geochemical characterization of the reservoir is achieved by sediment sampling with the mobile autoclave drilling device MeBo. The A2 techniques will be tested and improved on several joint cruises.
