The expedition SO254 took place between January 26th and Febuary 27th, 2017 in the southwest Pacific off the eastern coast of New Zeland. Station were located between 29° and 5° South.
Objectives of the expedition included the sampling of the water column with respect to bacterial communities, as well as the sampling of the seafloor with respect to the occurrence and distribution of megafauna, especially sponges, corals and echinotderms (e.g. holothurians, starfish etc.).
ROV KIEL 6000 was the main tool for sampling the seafloor and accompished 19 scientific dives in water depths up to approximately 5000m. Main tasks included the documentation and mapping of megafauna communities and, most of all, the sampling of target organisms.
The expedition was conducted within the project PoriBacNewZ (BMBF financed).
