Expedition SO229 with RV SONNE took place between June and July and led to Vanuatu in the Western Pacific Ocean.
Aims of the VANUATU/COVOLVE expedition were the investigation of the magmatic evolution of the Vanuatu Island-Arc- and Back-Arc-Systems, the identification of different magma sources as well as the search for hydrothermal vent fields in order to establish relationships between volcanic, hydrothermal and biolgoical processes.
ROV KIEL 6000 was one of the deployed tools and completed 11 scientific dives in water depths of more than 3300 m. Main tasks were geological sampling as well as the exploration of the seaflor with respect to hydrothermal activity.
