Expedition SO299 Dynamet started in Townsville on the 6th of June, 2023 and ended in Singapore on the 29th of July. The working area was located in the western Pacific off Papua Neuguinea, with a focus on the New Ireland Basin and the island of Lihir. The ROV was deployed at various seamounts (Conical, Edmond, Pikinini and New World) as well as at the Weitin Fault and at the Mussau Trench.
Main tasks of the ROV were exploration, mapping and sampling of rocks, lavae, bacterial mats, sediments, as well as fluids, gasses and temperatures. During the first dive a formerly unknown hydrothermal vent field, later named Karambusel (= mussel), was discovered and subsequently investigated in detail during further dives.
ROV KIEL 6000 completed 12 scientific dives in water depths between 1000 and 5100 metres.
