CDRatlas: Insights into CO₂ Removal

Addressing climate change requires urgent action and is among the most pressing challenges of our time. Emission reduction scenarios indicate that negative emissions - the removal and long-term storage of carbon dioxide from the atmosphere (Carbon Dioxide Removal, CDR) - are essential to limiting global warming to below 2°C. Although the feasibility of CDR methods has been extensively researched, the potential for CDR implementation continues to be limited by the lack of access to evidence-based knowledge for decision-makers in policy, industry and society.

The Carbon Removal Atlas (CDRatlas) aims to bridge this knowledge gap by compiling scientific data and concepts on CDR and integrating them into an interactive, freely accessible web platform. The information is presented through a combination of process chains, geospatial data visualizations, and additional text-based information.

The process chains identify the key steps required to implement each CDR approach. Based on these steps, data is collected and presented as interactive maps or text-based information. In addition to literature, the CDR Literature Library provides access to strategy papers, reports and fact sheets.

In this way, the CDRatlas provides transparency and helps decision-makers assess the environmental and technological feasibility of different CDR approaches and identify implementation options.
