From September 23 to November 1, 27 scientists study the Chilean continental margin in the eastern Pacific onboard the German research vessel SONNE. They aim to learn more about the pathways and fluxes of fluids and volatile components in the subduction zone and would like to assess the risk of earthquakes, slides and tsunamis better. On the expedition SO-210, which is conducted under the Collaborative Research Center 574 "Volatiles and fluids in subduction zones", the researchers use different instruments such as the ROV KIEL 6000 an the video-controlled hydraulic grab. Chief Scientist of the cruise is Dr. Peter Linke, marine biologist at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences (IFM-GEOMAR).
