POSEIDON POS506

Area:
Skagerrak Kattegat
Time:
30.09.2016 - 10.10.2016
Institution:
GEOMAR
Chief scientist:
Jamileh Javidpour

The main aim of the cruise is to investigate the horizontal and vertical distribution of abiotic factors as well as planktonic and benthic components along the environmental salinity gradient, from the Baltic Sea to the Kattegatt and Skagerrak regions. This includes data collection on temperature, salinity and oxygen as well as chl a, phytoplankton, mesozooplankton, macroplankton and macrozoobenthos. The hypothesis for the students is to test whether the Remane’s concept holds for both, pelagic and benthic communities. The second main goal is to demonstrate students how to do science on a research vessel. Eight students of the “Biological oceanography” (M.Sc.) course will be permanently trained by three staff scientists. To strengthen the student’s network, a day-visit to the Sven Lovén Centre for Marine Sciences in Kristineberg is organized. Finally M.Sc. students of Marine Science at Gothenburg University visit RV POSEIDON.
