Seismic, geochemical and geotechnical work on the Danube deep-sea fan is planned in order to detect and quantify marine gas hydrates within porous and permeable sediments. The ultimate goal is to define potential sites in European waters for a field test to produce methane from gas hydrates while sequestering CO2. During a first leg 2D-seismic and refraction seismic profiles shall be acquired and a piezometer for long-term observations of the seafloor installed. During a second leg detailed 3D-seismic and geochemical investigations shall take place together with heat flow measurements.
