Peter Braesicke, Karlsruhe Institute of Technology, Karlsruhe (Germany): "Climate sensitivity: Does stratospheric ozone matter?"

11 Uhr, Hörsaal West, Düsternbrooker Weg 20

Abstract:

Climate sensitivity is an important metric to characterise Earth system models. Its value depends on a range of feedback mechanisms. Here, the role of stratospheric ozone and how it is represented in Earth system models will be illustrated. We will diagnose in a particular model (UMUKCA) the mechanisms and feedbacks modifying climate sensitivity, when ozone is allowed to change with climate change. The role of the El Nino/Southern Oscillation in shaping the models response will be discussed. It is appreciated that the detailed results of such a sensitivity study will depend on the model used. Therefore, I will finish with a description of recent model developments at our institute (ICON-ART @ IMK) and plans to extend such analysis using this model.
