Abstract:
The past 800,000 years of Earth’s history were dominated by global-scale variations between glacial and interglacial conditions with a high degree of nonlinearity in the climatic response to gradual external forcing. While it is a consensus that abrupt changes in the coupled climate system are a ubiquitous component of these glacial cycles, ample scope remains regarding their specific role due to limitations e.g. in process understanding. In this seminar talk we present investigations based on coupled climate model simulations in combination with various geological records to focus on a mechanistic understanding of the underlying dynamics. We will then present some innovations in the numerical representation of key processes to emphasize their importance for the simulation of past and future climate changes.
