Prof. Dr. Kevin Lamb, Department of Applied Mathematics, University of Waterloo, Waterloo (Canada):"The Effects of Steady Background Currents on Internal Wave Generation by Tide-Topography Interactions"

11:00 h, Hörsaal, Düsternbrooker Weg 20

Abstract:

Tide-topography interactions are the source of approximately half of the internal wave energy in the world’s ocean. In this talk I will discuss the effects of a steady surface-trapped background current on their generation in the two-dimensional context. Steady background currents introduce asymmetries in the upstream and downstream energy fluxes and in the form of internal solitary waves that are produced in non-uniform stratifications, with broader solitary waves forming in the downstream direction. A first-order linear theory that accurately predicts some aspects of the internal wave field will be presented.
