Abstract:
Small data (often referred to as ‘long-tail‘) can have a huge impact on science if they are made accessible in a re-usable manner. “Making SMALL Data BIG“encompasses topics that are particularly relevant for investigators who do field observations or generate data in the lab, often on samples collected in the field. The lecture addresses issues like new data policies of publishers, international efforts for persistent and unique identification of data and samples, investigators‘ role in the data curation process, etc. The presentation will demonstrate examples how small data have become big and have lead to new discoveries, but also emphasize the challenges related to these small data and the infrastructure required to manage them.
Dr. Lehnert is head of the Interdisciplinary Earth Data Alliance (IEDA), a community based facility that provides data services for the Ocean, Earth, and Polar Sciences to support, sustain, and advance the geosciences.
