The fourth leg of the 17th expedition of the German research vessel MARIA S. MERIAN (MSM 17/4) takes place from 10 March to 12 April 2011. The working area lies off the coast of Senegal and Mauretania. The cruise’s aim is to study the oxygen minimum zone (OMZ) which stretches from the coast of West-Africa into the tropical Atlantic. Chief scientist is Dr Olaf Pfannkuche (IFM-GEOMAR). The cruise is part of the Collaborative Research Centre (Sonderforschungsbereich) 754 „Climate-Biogeochemistry Interactions in the Tropical Ocean“, which is funded by the German Research Foundation (DFG) at Kiel University and at the Leibniz Institute of Marine Sciences IFM-GEOMAR.
