Carsten Rühlemann

The 205th expedition of the German research vessel SONNE (14.4.2010, Tahiti - 21.5.2010, Manzanillo, Mexico) is aimed to investigate the formation of manganese nodules through the study of (1)microbial and abiotic early diagenetic processes, (2) reconstructions of the processes controlling the formation of nodules, such as deep-water circulation, bottom water ventilation, and paleoproductivity, using geochemical and isotopic methods, and (3) the exploration of the diversity of the benthic faunal assemblage which we plan to compare with results of formerly inverstigated manganese nodule areas. Chief Scientist is Dr. Carsten Rühlemann of the Federal Institute for Geosciences and Natural Resources (BGR). IFM-GEOMAR participates with a team of scientists led by Prof. Anton Eisenhauer.
