The cruise P399/2 (31.05.-17.06.2010) and 399/3 (19.06.-24.06.2010) with R/V POSEIDON is part of the 2nd phase of the BMBF joint project SOPRAN (Surface Ocean Processes in the Anthropocence) and its main aim is to investigate the role of coastal regions for the formation and emissions of halocarbons (CHBr3 and others) and reactive inorganic halogen compounds (BrO and others). The target area is the upwelling area off Mauritania. The cruise is part of a quasi-Lagrangian experiment which also includes a concurrent land sampling campaign at the Mauritanian coast (Banc d‟Arguin). This approach for the first time should allow us to investigate the influence of terrestrial halocarbon emissions on the composition of the marine atmosphere off Mauritania. Chief scientist of P399/2 is Dr. Herrmann Bange (IFM-GEOMAR, RD2).
