POSEIDON POS405

Area:
Danube delta
Time:
08.12.2010 - 22.12.2010
Institution:
IFM-GEOMAR
Chief scientist:
Jörg Bialas

From 9 December to 23 December 2010 the research vessel POSEIDON from Kiel is on an expedition in the Black Sea. The cruise is part of the SUGAR (Submarine Gas Hydrate Reservoirs)-project. The project aims to produce natural gas from marine methane hydrates and to sequester carbon dioxide (CO2) from power plants and other industrial sources as CO2-hydrate in marine sediments. During the cruise with R/V POSEIDON scientist from IFM-GEOMAR will test sensor-technolgies to detect gas-bubbles and free gas in the sediments of the deep sea. These gas bubbles and reservoirs of free gas are indicators for gas hydrates in the sediments. Chief scientist is Dr. Jörg Bialas (IFM-GEOMAR).
